ملاحظتان هامتان تعينك على فهم حروف الجر ...

1. حروف الجر في الغالب إما معنوية أو حسية (ملموسة) مثلها مثل حروف الجر في اللغة العربية فنقول مثلاً (على):
- ضع القلم على الطاولة (حسي) وهذا ما يسمى الاستعلاء الحسي
- على الطالب أن يجتهد في الدرس (معنوي) ويسمى الاستعلاء المعنوي

مثال آخر (من) تفيد أماالتبعيض (بعض من) أوتفيد الابتداء
- قرأت من الكتاب قصصاً مفيدة
- سافرت أسماء من مصر إلى مكة ليحج


2. من استخدامات حرف الجر above الفوقية ويعني عدم الملامسة فهناك فرق بينه وبين on الذي يفيد الملامسة أمثلة:
حلق الطائر فوق الشجرة (فوقية)
وضعت الأقلام على الكتاب (ملامسة)

فحرف الجر above يتقارب كثيراً مع over حتى أنهما يتبادلان أحياناً إلا أن بينهما فروق سنتحدث عنها في وقتها

- من استخدامات حرف الجر above الترفع ويعني أن فلاناً يترفع عن شئ دنئ وسلبي مثل
Ali is above cheating يترفع علي عن الغش أي أنه لا يغش ... فنقول

Above indicates that a person is too good to commit the stated negative action

وعادة تكون الأسماء التي تلي كلمة above أسماء تعبر عن صفات سيئة مثل
cruelty, dishonesty, meanness, perjury, theft, murder, treason
breaking the law, cheating, gossiping, lying, robbing, snooping, stealing
